Mean field fracture in disordered solids: Statistics of fluctuations

چکیده

Power law distributed fluctuations are known to accompany \emph{terminal} failure in disordered brittle solids. The associated intermittent scale-free behavior is of interest from the fundamental point view as it emerges universally an intricate interplay threshold-type nonlinearity, quenched disorder, and long-range interactions. We use simplest mean-field description such systems show that they can be expected undergo a transition between quasi-brittle (ductile) responses. While former characterized by power distribution avalanches, latter, statistics avalanches predominantly Gaussian. realization particular regime depends on variance disorder effective rigidity represented combination elastic moduli. argue robust criticality, cases earthquakes collapsing porous materials, indicates self-tuning system towards boundary separating ductile regimes.

Thermal Fluctuations of Thin Wetting Films on Disordered Solids

We consider thin liquid layers which completely wet nonideal (either rough or heterogeneous in composition) solid surfaces. Two different sources of fluctuations of the liquid surface are identified, and the competition between them is investigated. For thick enough films (but still in the submicrometer range), the liquid surface fluctuations are dominated by thermally induced capillary waves. ...

Mean-field theory of strongly disordered superconductors

Qualitative features of the mean-field theory of superconductivity in a strongly disordered system of fermions with short-range attraction are discussed. In this limit the effective theory at low energies is entirely bosonic, and I consider both the artificial infiniterange limit and the more realistic case of ”nearest-neighbor” hopping of bosons between the localized states. In the infinite-ra...

Mean-field models for disordered crystals

In this article, we set up a functional setting for mean-field electronic structure models of Hartree-Fock or Kohn-Sham types for disordered crystals. The electrons are quantum particles and the nuclei are classical point-like particles whose positions and charges are random. We prove the existence of a minimizer of the energy per unit volume and the uniqueness of the ground state density of su...

Metastability in Stochastic Dynamics of Disordered Mean-field Models

We study a class of Markov chains that describe reversible stochastic dynamics of a large class of disordered mean field models at low temperatures. Our main purpose is to give a precise relation between the metastable time scales in the problem to the properties of the rate functions of the corresponding Gibbs measures. We derive the analog of the WentzellFreidlin theory in this case, showing ...

Onset of synchronization in the disordered Hamiltonian mean-field model.

We study the Hamiltonian mean field (HMF) model of coupled Hamiltonian rotors with a heterogeneous distribution of moments of inertia and coupling strengths. We show that when the parameters of the rotors are heterogeneous, finite-size fluctuations can greatly modify the coupling strength at which the incoherent state loses stability by inducing correlations between the momenta and parameters o...
